چکیده

Ethylene (ethene) was found to inhibit methane formation in slurries from sewage sludge and sediment samples taken from freshwater and marine sources. Methane formation from sediment contents was inhibited by 50% at 0.07% ethylene concentration in the gas phase (approx. 5 #moll -1 in the aqueous phase) and by 94% at >i 0.5% ethylene in the gas phase (>1 36 #mol. 1-1 in the aqueous phase). Sulphate reduction was not impaired. Methane formation from added acetate, hydrogen or methanol was inhibited by >1 98%, from lactate by about 90%. The inhibition was reversible, and methanogenic activity recuperated completely after ethylene removal. Cyclopentadiene and cycloheptatriene led to strong inhibition; benzene, toluene, isoprene, and 1-hexine to moderate inhibition of methanogenesis; several unsaturated linear hydrocarbons were without effect. Pure cultures of Methanospirillum hungatei, Methanothrix soehngenii, and Methanosarcina barkeri were all inhibited by 50% at 0.05-0.1% ethylene concentration in the gas phase (3.6-7.2 /zmol. 1-1 in the aqueous phase). Pure cultures of Acetobacterium woodii, Halobacterium halobium and Sulfolobus acidocaldarius were not significantly inhibited by either ethylene or acetylene. Ethylene is recommended as a selective inhibitor of methanogenesis for physiological and enrichment experiments with sediment and sludge sampies.

Inhibition of Growth of a Graphium sp. on Gaseous n-Alkanes by Gaseous n-Alkynes and n-Alkenes.

The growth of a filamentous fungus, a Graphium sp., on n-alkanes (C(inf2) to C(inf4)) was inhibited by low concentrations of acetylene, propyne, 1-butyne, ethylene, and propylene. Acetylene and other unsaturated hydrocarbons had no effect on the growth of the Graphium sp. on potato dextrose broth, ethanol, or acetate. Our results suggest that n-alkynes and n-alkenes are selective inhibitors of ...

Anaerobic transformation of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons in a sand aquifer based on spatial chemical distributions

We estimated the distribution of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs) from groundwater samples collected along three transects in a sand aquifer. Trichloroethylene (TCE) leaked and contaminated the aquifer probably more than a decade before we collected the measurements. The data show significant concentrations of TCE, cis-1,2dichloroethylene (c-DCE), vinyl chloride (VC), and ethene. We at...

Second-order perturbation theory with complete and restricted active space reference functions applied to oligomeric unsaturated hydrocarbons.

Multiconfigurational second-order perturbation theory based on either a complete active space reference wave function (CASSCF/CASPT2) or a restricted active space reference wave function (RASSCF/RASPT2) has been applied to compute one-electron ionization potentials and vertical electronic energy differences of oligomers of length n formed from ethylene (n = 1-10), acetylene (n = 1-5), and pheny...

The role of isovalency in the reactions of the cyano (CN), boron monoxide (BO), silicon nitride (SiN), and ethynyl (C2H) radicals with unsaturated hydrocarbons acetylene (C2H2) and ethylene (C2H4).

The classification of chemical reactions based on shared characteristics is at the heart of the chemical sciences, and is well exemplified by Langmuir's concept of isovalency, in which 'two molecular entities with the same number of valence electrons have similar chemistries'. Within this account we further investigate the ramifications of the isovalency of four radicals with the same X(2)Σ(+) ...
